I met Christa Beth Corley around 6 years ago. We both share a passion for art and mentoring individuals and seeing people develop from kids, to creative adults. Christa’s gentle spirit and honest opinion have produced a fun art form that made her an easy choice for the fanboy gallery. Part of the fun with Christa’s style is the semi photorealistic style that feels to me like hot cocoa on a cold day or any other example of comfort and relaxation. Additionally, she is exploring the facets of art through makeup. This is a place I enjoy being a spectator and eagerly learning about an artform I know nothing about. When she designs a makeup theme from an animated movie she enjoys, It opens a world to those who truly want a moment of sunshine. When I asked her to be the first fanboy she enthusiastically agreed and here is the result of our conversation.
1 Who are you and what artforms do you use?
Christa Corley - watercolor and ink, pencil sketching, wood burning, poetry, and makeup artistry
2 What are your 5 favorite movies?
Its a Wonderful Life, Meet Me In St. Louis, Lord of the Rings, Tommy Boy and Silence
3 How has your craft developed?
I have early memories of both my grandfathers and my father drawing. I would watch them and take in their style and technique. I also remember watching every PBS artist I could after school and soaking in all I could. Most of my art was self taught through observation or books. As a high school and college student I learned a great deal through the great teacher - Youtube.
4 What are you artistic inspirations?
I love being inspired by natural textures and nature itself. In terms of specific artists, I love the work of writers and feel more inspired by what poets and storytellers can elicit.
5 What is an artist or art form that is catching your attention?
I have recently started wood burning. I love the idea of art reliant on only line work. It adds an extra level of creativity and challenge to convey concepts and image without color or traditional technique.
6 What is the best piece of advice a fellow artist gave you?
A friend who was also a poet and sketch artist told me to create unafraid. As artists we can often find ourselves in a place of hyper criticism as we try to get our ideas or concepts into a perceivable form. I have to remind myself that as a creator I owe no one a certain style or portrayal. I am allowed to express and create whatever I choose in whatever way I choose.
7How do you seek opportunities to share your art?
\I’ve only recently become brave enough to do this via social media platforms. For me my art, particularly my written art, is incredibly personal. I love sharing it one on one when I feel the trust I feel it requires within a friendship.
8 Where would you like your art to go? Thematically and styleThematically, I would like to do a watercolor and ink series based on flora and bodies of water from various places I’ve lived. Stylistically I would love a flow and vibrant color palette given structure through black line work. I’m also working on a book that is based around agricultural themed allegorical short stories. Each chapter begins with the short story and an accompanying art piece and is then used as a vehicle to share and teach from various life experiences. With my makeup artistry, I’d like to do a series of makeup looks based around classic novels. We’ll see.9 Do you have any advice for artists who come after youDon't create based on anyone else’s expectations of you or your work. Take some risks that give your work and your style character. And be content if those things morph and change over time!
10 the next question? What is one art trend or concept that you disagree with or would do away with, and why?
