Isaac Torres aka Ichacha

A Name you can dance to...

One of the privileges of interviewing people online is I get the honor of meeting new and interesting people. With Isaac I met someone from another country and at first my friend wasn't sure if he was going to participate. Happily, he changed his mind and I get to share some of his work with you, my friends.

Talent that inspires stories and takes commissions

Isaacs's art is within the realm of science fiction and fantasy which is my bread and butter IF you like high fantasy this is an artist for you. His commissions are open and He is highly recommended I loved his answers in his interview and hope you enjoy them too.

Additional Information

1 Who are you and what artforms do you use?

Hi! I'm Isaac Torres aka Ichaca. I am an illustrator and concept artist focused on character design. I love drawing fantasy and science fiction characters. I work digitally although many of my sketches I do on paper.

2 What are your 5 favorite movies?  Oh that's a difficult question ahahaha I love “The Thing”, “The Big Fish”, “Coraline”, “Treasure Planet” and “Hot Fuzz”. These movies marked my life for good and I have very good memories of them.

3 How has your craft developed?  I started doing portraits in fairs and parks, then I got into the world of videogames and I had to learn to paint and draw digitally.   I was always afraid to start as a full time artist. In 2020 I was unemployed but I decided to learn as much as I could and in December of that year I started doing commissions. I had ups and downs and learned a lot of things. Now I am a full time artist but I still have a long way to go.  One of the reasons why I didn't start being an artist before was because I thought I wasn't good at painting. Everything I did was in black and white, but thanks to the advice of my friends I tried it and now I love to paint hahaha.

4 What are your artistic inspirations?  I always go on facebook, instagram and twitter and see the work of other artists. That always encourages me a lot. I also do a lot of art courses. Someone I highly recommend is Jean Fraisse. Everything he teaches inspires me a lot.

5 What is an artist or art form that is catching your attention?  I like a lot of things but mainly everything related to Fantasy. The art of Magic the gathering and the Heartstone amazes me. Also the comics of Mike Mignola, Mike miller and Salvador Sans. Hellboy, Nocturne and Astonishing X-men are great comics.

6 What is the best piece of advice a fellow artist gave you?   Not wanting to be perfect. I'm an illustrator who deals with anxiety a lot. Most of the time because I'm a perfectionist. I try to make all my drawings a masterpiece but that makes it take me a long time to paint and I spend a lot of time on insignificant things. A friend of mine told me that you have to make good illustrations but don't seek perfection. That's great advice and every day I try to discipline myself and not get obsessed with my artwork.

7How do you seek opportunities to share your art?   I mainly use facebook. There are many groups where you can offer your illustration services. But there is also instagram and twitter.

8 Where would you like your art to go? Thematically and style?  I love to make illustrations and fantasy character designs. I want to be able to improve my backgrounds. It's my weakness at the moment. Another thing I'm practicing a lot is to leave lineart in my works. I want to delimit the shapes of my paintings only with colors and values.

9 How do you want your art to affect the world? How do you want to be remembered as an artist? Do you create for a cause?  That's a very good question. I want to be recognized as a great fantasy artist.  I want to help people design their characters and be happy with that. Art is for people to be happy.
