I first saw Josh's art on New Year's Day. I'm a huge Lord of the rings fan and one of my favorite moments is the death of Boromir. After seeing this amazing piece of Art, I had to ask. Josh is a true artist, and his figure studies show his attention to realistic form. On a gamble, I sent him a message and asked if he would be willing to feature his talent. I hope you enjoyed his response as much as I did.
1 Who are you and what artforms do you use?
I'm Josh Williams, and I'm a hobby illustrator. I usually work traditionally with ink and graphite, but several of my pieces I've done digitally.
2 What are your 5 favorite movies?
Ooh, movies. I don't watch a ton of movies. My top is probably the Lord of the Rings. (I consider the trilogy one movie because it's 1 saga.) Next is probably Sucker Punch. The Dark Knight is third. Mad Max Fury Road is on there somewhere and Alita: Battle Angel. I know that's 4 but this is a tough question!
3 How has your craft developed?
Slowly! It's taken a ton of effort and practice. I started out copying anime and manga, but I fell in love with western comics and started to idolize that style. I dabbled in a ton of media and styles over the years. I took a long break through college and a few years after, but I picked up the passion again a couple years back and have been hitting it hard since.
4 What are your artistic inspirations?
I find inspiration in others' art mostly. Books, movies, illustrations. It can be found everywhere. I heard once that artists have to watch a movie a couple times because the first time is filling their library with imagery to draw from. I try to do that with all art!
5 What is an artist or art form that is catching your attention?
Frank Frazzeta is one of my all time favorite artists. He was a master of the human form and it showed in everything. I also love his ability to suggest a scene with very little information. I will die happy if I could learn to emulate half of his skill.6 What is the best piece of advice a fellow artist gave you? Find a good teacher. I don't mean take classes, necessarily, but find someone you can learn from. You can skip a lot of the painful growing pains if you learn how others have dealt with it. In today's world it's SO easy to connect with artists. Use our resources.
7How do you seek opportunities to share your art?
Mostly Facebook. I do this primarily as a hobby so I don't have many official art pages. Social media is a great way to share your art and connect with other artists.
8 Where would you like your art to go? Thematically and style?
Well, I love well inked pieces. I would love to be able to get to the level of Frank Miller. Just creating a scene with black and white. It's like magic.
9 Do you have any advice for artists who come after you?
Practice, practice, practice. And not just blind drawing making the same mistakes. Learn to practice and work to improve. Finding a good teacher can help you figure out where your shortcomings are and you can practice smarter. Make the most of every minute you spend creating.
10.If you were not an artist, whether a full-time professional or a hobbyist, what would you be doing instead?
I honestly can't imagine anything else. Art has been such a big part of my life since elementary school, I can't even fathom life without it… I like cooking. Maybe a chef.. lol
